ALS signed “P. H. Sheridan,” five pages on three lightly lined sheets (two adjoining), 5.25 x 6.5, December 26, 1883. Sheridan writes to Mr. Ponce. In part: “I think you will want a better comprehension of military matters…. I long ago concluded that I would keep silent even in matters that affected my own operations…. That is a great reason why the book you propose should be written before my death, as many official reports were too brief. I did my work without pulling sufficient value as it concerned myself…. If the time has come and I could have sufficient intercourse with the person willing, I could give the points, motives, incidents as yet unknown to the people….” The letter evidently relates to a proposed biography of Sheridan; the general ultimately published his own memoir in 1888. In very good condition, with eradications to first page (totaling about two lines) resulting in spots of skinning, intersecting folds (vertical fold to signature) and light scattered toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition.
