Italian composer (1858–1919) best known for his operas, particularly the beloved repertoire staple I Pagliacci (1892). Unusual 4 x 6.5 half-length cabinet photo, signed in ink “R. Leoncavallo,” dedicated in French to Wagnerian tenor Wilhelm Birrenkoven, and dated Bayreuth, July 28, 1894, Leoncavallo adding a two-measure musical quotation (the familiar motive from Act I of Pagliacci). In good condition, with slightly irregular ink adhesion, scattered soiling, light staining to upper right corner (touching sentiment and signature), and spot of skinning to left edge (just touching musical staff). An interesting association with his most famous work! RRAuction COA.
