French physician and politician (1738–1814) whose name became synonymous with the “humane” instrument of execution whose use he proposed to the government during the French Revolution. Scarce LS in French signed “Guillotin,” one page, 8 x 12.25, May 10, 1791. Guillotin writes to the dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. In part (translated): “M. Lallis, physician, [asks] the Committee of Health to propose the printing to the National Assembly, at the expense of the nation. It concerns a French translation of all the works of Hippocrates, of which he is the author. The Commission decided to commission the Faculty of Medicine to examine this translation….” Faint intersecting folds (vertical fold to first letter of signature) and a hint of subtle handling wear, otherwise very fine, bright condition.
