British artist and writer (1812–1898) best known for his “nonsense” books, which feature his quirky drawings and amusing verse. Among his most timeless efforts are the poem “The Owl and the Pussycat,” as well as hundreds of limericks, a literary form he elevated to perfection. In part: “These lines are only written to thank you for the immence pleasure the reading of your Books has given me—during 4 months of confinement—mostly in my bed—by illness. Fiji, Hawaii, China, &c &c & most particularly the Himalayas & India—every part of which I think … I think I have visited. I have just now finished the Hebrides (but am glad I needn’t go there), & I have still the granite crags of California & the … cruise in a French ship to look forward to….” Hinging remnants to one edge (a few spots of related thinning), mild handling wear, and early collector’s ink notation to foot of second page, otherwise fine condition.
