ALS signed “Wm. McKinley,” one lightly page, 4.75 x 7.75, Committee on Ways and Means, House of Representatives letterhead, February 14, 1882. McKinley writes to the Secretary of the Treasury [Charles J. Folger]. In full: “What is the value of silver service imported by Alfred E. Lee, late Consul at Frankfurt and amount of duty assessed thereon. The silver is now held at port of New York. Answer.” Capt. Alfred E. Lee was private secretary to Ohio Governor Rutherford B. Hayes. After he was elected president in 1876, Hayes appointed Lee as Consul-General at Frankfurt am Main. The Washington Post reported that on July 1st, 1881, President Garfield appointed “Ferdinand Vogeler, of Ohio, Consul-General at Frankfort, Vice A. E.
