Description

Millionaires’ club: “The [Straus] brothers ought to give us something handsome but I ought not to be brought into it in any way”

TLS as Governor, one page, 8 x 10.5, Executive Mansion, Albany letterhead, January 24, 1930. FDR writes to Basil O’Connor, his close friend and former law partner. In part: “In regard to the two family gifts—the Lehmans are, I think out of the question for reasons I will explain to you when I see you. In regard to the Strauses, I agree with you that the three brothers ought to give us something handsome but I ought not to be brought into it in any way. After all, Herbert is a Trustee and all three are good friends of mine. The approach, however, should come from someone else, leaving me out of the picture….” Secretarial stamps and pencil notations, otherwise fine condition. JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
