Description

The GOP loses the 1964 presidential election: “We’ll keep up the good fight”

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, November 10, 1964. Reagan writes to Jeanne H. Wattel in Los Angeles. In full: “Just a hasty line to thank you for your kind letter and your wonderful poem, which I have on my desk and shall keep there. You are right, the fight has just begun. don’t be discouraged. Ours is a strong force and a good cause, and we’ll keep up the good fight.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, a copy of the poem in question (titled “The Day Freedom Died, November 3, 1964,” evidently a lament in the wake of Goldwater’s election defeat), and two unsigned carbons of letters from Wattel to Reagan, one sending the poem, the other seeking a job. A few light, mainly marginal stains, otherwise fine condition. Good early political content from the future governor and president! RRAuction COA.
