Description

John Frederick Herschel

British mathematician, astronomer, and inventor (1792–1871) known for his discoveries related to the moons of Saturn and Uranus and for his pioneering work in early photographic processes, including coining the word “photography” itself and explaining the concepts of negative and positive in relation to photography. ALS signed “J. F. W. Herschel,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7.5, March 28, 1824, referring to his father Sir William Herschel, the discoverer of Uranus and to Alexander Humbolt, the famous naturalist and explorer. Herschel writes from Brompton to Major Kater. In part: “I received the papers on the Construction of Specula safe…. I am sorry it is not possible for me to look out the rest of my Father’s MSS on the same subject previous to my going abroad—indeed there are only the rough experiments in 4 or 5 volumes from which the general rules you have read are compiled…. Mr. Humboldt shall have his compass….” The adjacent leaf bears the address panel. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (a few edge separations), light edge wear with a few tiny chips (small tear to last letter of signature), and scattered light soiling and (mostly marginal) glue stains.
