Description

Alan Paton

South African writer and political activist (1903–1988) best known for the novel Cry, the Beloved Country. ALS signed “Alan Paton (Alan to you),” one page, 7.5 x 10.5, October 28, 1951. Paton writes to Dick. In part: “You will not need to be told by me that your letter caused me great shock & grief, nor will you need to be told that I had a deep affection for all your family, & was never happier anywhere in America than in your house…. It is you who now stands out most clearly in my memory, & you will know without my putting it into words how deep is my sympathy for you. I shall also be glad to hear from you from time to time, & promise too to be a faithful correspondent…. I would not dream of visiting America again & not renewing our friendship….” Original fold to first letter of signature, light wrinkling, and a few faint stains (touching first name), otherwise fine condition.
