Signing a 1776 pay order

Third Chief Justice of the United States and delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84) who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut’s war expenditures. Manuscript DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8.25 x 5, February 19, 1776. A pay order issued to Colo. Charles Webb, paymaster of the 1st Company of the 7th Connecticut Regiment. Countersigned by T[homas] Seymour; Webb has signed on the reverse. The document has been lightly hinged to a larger sheet. Intersecting folds (lightly touching signature) and a few small stains, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
