Promoting an officer earlier wounded at Chickamauga

Partly printed DS as President, one page, 15.75 x 19.5, July 8, 1882. President Arthur appoints Joshua A. Fessenden “Captain in the Fifth Regiment of Artillery.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Arthur, and countersigned by Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln. Joshua A. Fessenden (1841–1908) served as Captain in the Fifth Regiment of Artillery. He enlisted in the 1st Maine Cavalry on Oct. 19, 1861, as a sergeant, and would later be wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga. He was also the nephew of Lincoln’s Secretary of the Treasury William P. Fessenden. Small separations and paper loss along storage folds, and mild toning (a bit heavier in the folds), otherwise fine condition. Arthur’s signature is bold and measures 4.5 inches long.
