Frank Leahy

Renowned college football coach (1908–1973) who, after serving as an assistant at Georgetown, Michigan State, and Fordham, became head coach at Boston College. In 1941, he became head coach and athletic director at Notre Dame, his alma mater. In his 13 years at Notre Dame, Leahy’s teams won 107 games, lost 13, and tied 9. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, University of Notre Dame letterhead, October 20, 1949. Leahy writes to Mrs. William J. Falsey in New Haven, Connecticut. In full: “Just a note to express our sincere appreciation for your kind letter regarding the Washington game officiating. Feel very badly about the incident, but felt obligated to defend Notre Dame and the fine lads who represent this institution….” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
