Pioneering African-American contralto (1897–1993) best remembered for her memorable 1939 performance on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial after the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let her perform for a racially mixed audience at Constitution Hall. In 1955, she became the first African-American performer with the Metropolitan Opera, as Ulrica in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera. Vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Elinore Sayre, Sincerely, Marian Anderson.” In very good condition, with tack holes to bottom edge and all four corners, and scattered light surface marks and creases.
