Description

“IT ENCOURAGES THE DECAY OF TEETH”: Golfer-turned-lawyer-and-businessman BOBBY JONES defends Coca-Cola against a “whispering campaign”

TLS signed “Bob,” one page, 8.5 x 11, law firm letterhead, August 25, 1949. Jones writes to Rufus Brown at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Rutland, Vermont. In part: “We were confronted with what seems to be a fairly well organized whispering campaign directed against Coca-Cola on two counts: 1. That it encourages decay of the teeth, and 2. That it produces kidney trouble. Dad had a conversation about this with Delony Sledge, as a result of which, Delony wrote a letter to Dick Bennett, manager of the plant at Eau Claire. I think the letter has so much good common sense in it and it is such a fine discussion of a very important phase of any Coca-Cola bottling operation that I am sending it to the managers of all the plants in which I have any interest….” Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from James Spence. Light handling wear, otherwise fine condition. JSA/Mike Gutierrez Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
