TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, U.S. Civil Service Commission letterhead, October 4, 1893. Roosevelt writes to A. W. Elson & Co. in Boston. In full: “Owing to the absence in the west I have just received your letter. I take pleasure in telling you that I did purchase a copy of the Stuart Athenaeum Washington [i.e., the familiar “dollar bill” portrait of the first president by Gilbert Stuart], as you were informed….” In very good condition, with edge separations at mailing folds, a few small tears, wrinkling (slightly touching a letter or two of signature), and mild soiling.
