Description

“The highest opinion of him as an officer and gentleman”

LS signed “W. T. Sherman,” two lightly lined pages, 7.75 x 10.25, February 14, 1888. Sherman writes to George Ernst, secretary of the Massachusetts Club. In part: “I am in receipt of your very courteous invitation … and for the distinguished honor I am deeply grateful. My engagements, I regret to say, are such that I find it will be simply impossible to commit myself for a single day during this winter, and I must therefore decline your proffered hospitality. I remember your brother, Major Ernest, U.S. Eng’rs, very well, and have the highest opinion of him as an officer and gentleman….” In good to very good condition, with light wrinkling, light toning and soiling with a few stains, and chips and tears to bottom of first page (partly repaired from reverse), touching a few words. The signature is clear, dark, and unaffected by any faults. RRAuction COA.
