Description

SON OF A GUN: Handwritten envelope sent from Russia by LEE HARVEY OSWALD to his mother and used as an official exhibit during the WARREN COMMISSION investigation

Mailing envelope addressed and signed in Oswald’s hand, 6 x 4.25, postmarked Minsk, June 25, 1961. Oswald has addressed the envelope to his mother, Marguerite: “U.S.A., Crowell, Texas, Box 608, Mrs. M. Oswald,” and has added his Minsk return address in Russian, including his name, at lower left. The envelope, together with the letter originally contained within (see Lot 358), was an official exhibit (No. 180) in the Warren Commission investigation into JFK’s assassination; the envelope, like most of the exhibits, was at that time protectively soft-laminated. The item is reproduced on page 531 of Volume XVI of Hearings before the President’s commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy (aka the Warren Report). Provenance: Charles Hamilton Galleries auction, New York, December 12, 1968. A copy of the original catalogue listing and final price list accompanies the envelope. Lamination as noted and light soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
