American military officer and politician (1808–1889) who, after serving as a senator and U.S. Secretary of War, was the first and only president of the Confederacy, from 1861 until its collapse at the end of the Civil War. ALS signed “Jeffer Davis,” one page, 7 x 9, April 9, 1859. Letter to a gentleman requesting two favors. In full, “Please send me a copy of the order assigning Capt. Caufield to the North at Sault Ste. Marie. And you will oblige me by sending me two letters left on the mantle piece of the office.” Archivally double matted and framed with a color portrait of Davis, to an overall size of 20.5 x 15.5. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, some scattered toning and soiling, heavier to right side, and a small tear to lower right corner. R&R COA.
