African-American educator and activist (1856–1915) who emerged as one of the most prominent and influential civil rights figures of his time. TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, April 2, 1902. Letter to a collector and supporter. In part: “I am sending you under separate cover to-day copy of ‘Up From Slavery’ you were kind enough to send me for my autograh. I am very glad to serve you in this particular. I also wish to thank you for your kindness in offering me the hospitality of your home should my travels bring me to Minneapolis.” Light mirroring of text from intersecting mailing folds, and some scattered light foxing, otherwise fine condition.
