Influential American author (1804–1864) best known for such classic novels as The Scarlet Letter and the House of Seven Gables. Partly printed DS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 12.5, March 11, 1854. A shipping document for the vessel Owego, boldly signed “Nath. Hawthorne” as American Consul at the Port of Liverpool. The document retains its embossed paper seal. Attractively matted and framed with a color portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 23 x 20. Intersecting folds (faint vertical fold to “H”), small tape remant, and a few small spots of subtle discoloration, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
