Description

Seeking an appointment for a man “who is every way entitled to your favour and kindness”

Early ALS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, December 20, 1828. Tyler writes from the Senate Chamber to the paymaster general. In part: “Having been informed that a clerk in your bureau has lately departed this life and that the task devolves on you to supply his place, I take the liberty of presenting to your notice Mr. Denwood Barrow of the State of Maryland. I have assurances upon which you may entirely rely, that Mr. Barrow is one among the most amiable and respectable of men—and that he is fully qualified, as an accountant, in which line he is considered to be excelled by very few in the country, to fill the station now rendered vacant. I owe you an apology probably Sir, for presuming upon a very limited acquaintance with you, to making this recommendation. It will be found in the fact that I seek to contribute by bearing this humble testimonial in his favour, to elevate the fortunes of the gentleman, who is every way entitled to your favour and kindness….” Matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 19.25 x 16.75. In very good condition, with slightly irregular left edge, intersecting folds (a few edge separations), and chips to right edge lightly touching a few words (early tape repair at top right corner). The writing is clear and dark throughout, and the signature is unaffected by any faults. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
