WORLD STAGE: Vintage “diplomatic” autograph album signed by WINSTON CHURCHILL, MONTGOMERY OF ALAMEIN, MARC CHAGALL, HERMAN HESSE, and others

Vintage autograph album originally owned by the daughter of Henri Mouttet, a Swiss delegate to the League of Nations, comb-bound with marbled celluloid covers, 5 x 5.25, circa 1938–1961. All of the signatures are in ink; most are single sided. A number of personalities have signed together on the same page; many have also inscribed or added a sentiment. A few are pictured in photos (both loose and affixed to the respective page or page opposite), most candid and/or taken at the time of signing. Represented: nine members of the Swiss delegation to the League of Nation (together, Geneva, September 1938: Giuseppe Motta, W[illiam] Rappard, P[ierre] Aeby, [Ribert] Grimm, H[enri] Mouttet, [Camille] Gorge, Suzanne Ferriere, and Albert Huber); five members of the Iraqi delegation (together); three members of the Swedish delegation (Hanna Rydh, Osten Unden, K. J. Westmann); Helene Vacaresco (delegate from Roumania); Francisco Garcia Calderon (delegate from Peru); Halvdan Koht (delegate from Norway); Hoo Chi-Tsai (delegate from China); Eamon de Valera (delegate from Ireland); Maxim Litwinow (delegate from the U.S.S.R.); Henry Bordeaux (French writer); Eve Curie; Henri Guisan (Swiss general during WWII); Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands (together); Winston Churchill (September 17, 1946; with German press photo of Churchill addressing the Parliament in Berlin); Princess Charlotte and Prince Felix of Luxembourg (together); Montgomery of Alamein (February 22, 1949; adding “Field Marshal”); Werner Bergengruen (German writer); Hermann Hesse; Wilhelm Backhaus (pianist, adding a musical quotation from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4); Rudolf Alexander Schröder (German writer); Reinhold Schneider (German writer); Marc Chagall; Clara Haskil (pianist) and Bernhard Paumgartner (German writer; together); and Gunther Grass. In fine condition overall, with scattered mild handling wear, occasional collector’s notations, and a few minor smudges and spots. R&R COA.
