American statesman (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Partly printed DS as Governor of New York, one page, 13.5 x 8, March 25, 1797. An appointment for William Clapsaddle as second major of the Regiment of Militia in the County of Herkimer, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Weddrick. Countersigned by Jasper Hopper as Secretary. A clerical error elsewhere mistakenly assigns Weddrick’s rank to Clapsaddle. Matted to an overall size of 16 x 10.5. In fair to good condition, with vertical folds (partial separations and holes with reinforcements to reverse), scattered chips, holes, and tears elsewhere, allover toning and light staining (touching signature but not affecting legibility), and document lightly affixed to backing. R&R COA.
