Description

As railroad executive

Confederate general (1821–1877) who earned a reputation as the greatest cavalry officer of the Civil War. A subject of controversy even in his own lifetime, Forrest’s military legacy remains permanently clouded by his prewar career as a millionaire slave trader and, later, his role as first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Self-contained partial DS, signed “N. B. Forrest,” one page, 8.5 x 3.5, September 1, 1869. A guarantee for the payment of the principal and interest of a bond from the Selma, Marion, and Memphis Railroad Company, clipped from a larger bond certificate. A hint of subtle toning and soiling, and light show-through from printing on reverse, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
