ALS, one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.75, State of New York Executive Chamber letterhead, June 16, 1883. Cleveland writes to an unnamed general. In part: “Your very kind letter carrying an invitation to visit at your home and to meet Mr. Beecher [famed abolitionist and preacher Henry Ward Beecher?] is just received. It was thoughtful and kind in you to remember me in this matter, and to give me an opportunity to thank one, who more than once, had spoken kindly of me. But I cannot come. I leave here Tuesday to keep an engagement at Cornell University and intend to be about a week or more. I wish you would say something nice to Mr. Beecher for me….” Accompanied by a vintage typescript and dealer’s description from the Lincoln Library in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Light bend and a touch of mild soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
