Description

American statesman (1814–1886) who served as Governor of New York and who was the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate in the infamous disputed election of 1876. ALS signed “S. J. Tilden,” one page, 6.75 x 8.25, October 8, 1855. Tilden writes from New York to Richard French. In part: “I find your letter making certain inquiries as to my opinions in respect to coerced temper[?] and legislation. Having already stated my views … in reply to a similar letter … I take the liberty of enclosing a copy of that letter for your information….” Accompanied by an unsigned cabinet photo. In good condition, with intersecting folds (small holes and partial separations tape-reinforced from reverse), light show-through of tape stains, and light scattered soiling and wrinkling. The signature is clear and generally unaffected. R&R COA.
