Description

Writing to the President of Chile

Manuscript DS as president, signed “U. S. Grant,” one page both sides, 10.25 x 15.5, no date. An official letter to Federico Errazuriz, President of Chile. In part: “I have to acknowledge … the letter … announcing the termination of the mission of Don Joaquin Godoy as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of Chile … and to express to you my sincere regret that Mr. Godoy’s ill health should have prevented him from continuing to act as the Representative of Chile at this Capital…. The language and conduct of Mr. Godoy during his residence in this country were such as to merit the approbation of this government, and … secure for him the respect and esteem of all who have had intercourse with him. I am persuaded that he as already assured the government of Chile of the friendship of the United States and of their desire to preserve and strengthen the harmony and good understanding so happily subsisting between the two countries….” Countersigned by Hamilton Fish as secretary of state. Intersecting folds, mild soiling and handling wear, small loss to one corner, and subtle feathering to a few letters of signature, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
