American statesman (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Partly printed DS, one page, 15 x 9.5, January 27, 1800. An appointment for Peter P. Ham as lieutenant of a company in the Regiment of Militia in Columbia County. Countersigned by Daniel Hale as secretary. The document bears an embossed seal at upper left. In good condition, with allover toning, marginal chipping, intersecting folds (touching first letter of signature; partial separations elsewhere), and a few stains.
