American statesman (1782-1866) who served variously as Governor of Michigan, senator, Ambassador to France, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State. ALS signed “Lew. Cass,” one page, 8 x 9.75, June 3, 1833. Cass, then Secretary of War, writes to John Quincy Adams, then a Massachusetts congressman. In full: “Agreeable to the request in your letter of the 20th ult. I have the honour to transmit you pension certificates for Samuel Belcher and Solomon Thayer….” Accompanied by an early dealer’s catalogue entry.
