LET THERE BE LIGHT: EDISON signs a check in the year he founded the Menlo Park Laboratory in which he would perfect the phonograph and the incandescent light bulb

Bank check, 8 x 3, filled out and signed by Edison as “Thos. A. Edison, payable to Thos. H. DeVousney for $50.00, February 12, 1876. A day earlier, Edison celebrated his 29th birthday. Accompanied by an early photo. In very good condition overall, with vertical folds (one touching last letter; complete separation at central fold, away from signature; tape repairs to reverse, slightly showing through; small partial separation to another fold), cut and stamped cancellations (the latter lightly touching signature), and mild soiling and handling wear. Unusual from this early date! R&R COA.
