American politician (1769-1828) who served as senator and who, as Governor of New York, played a major role in the construction of the Erie Canal. Partly printed DS, one page, 15.75 x 10, June 10, 1820. An appointment for John Steel as ensign in the 50th Regiment of Infantry. In fair condition, with intersecting folds, a few chips and holes (the latter touching a few words of body), scattered toning, soiling, and faint spotting, and light show-through behind signature of docket on reverse. The signature is clean and otherwise unaffected and itself rates as very good to fine. R&R COA.
