Henry Clay

Distinguished statesman (1777–1852), longtime member of Congress, and three-time presidential candidate who became known as the “Great Compromiser” for his central role in the brokering of hot-button, slavery-related issues prior to the Civil War. Franking signature, “Free, H. Clay” on a 5 x 3.25 mailing panel addressed in his hand to George Hibb in Baltimore and bearing a faint postmark and “FREE” ink stamp. In very good condition, with scattered toning, light soiling, and faint staining, and mild handling wear with a few small tears. RRAuction COA.
