Description

HIGH PRAISE: EINSTEIN recommends “one of the most intelligent men whom I have met anywhere in the world”

ALS in German, signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.25 x 11, blind-embossed personal Princeton, N.J. letterhead, October 13, 1937. Einstein writes to Herr [Lionel] Ettlinger. In full (translated): “I am sending today to your office address the agreed-upon letter. It is written in very strong language, but I think it will serve the purpose. I recommend that you get in touch regarding methods of propaganda, with my friend Dr. Bucky (5 East 76th Str.), who will introduce you to Prof. Felix Bernstein (New York University); the latter is one of the most intelligent men whom I have met anywhere in the world. Will see that this will benefit our cause….” Ettlinger was an activist who devoted a large portion of his personal financial resources to aiding the cause of Jewish refugees; Bernstein (1878–1956) was a prominent mathematician who developed an influential theorem of equivalence of sets. In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to “E”), a few light creases and wrinkles, and light toning and a few chips to top and bottom edges. The signature is clear, dark and unaffected by any faults, and itself easily rates as fine. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
