In full: “I am so delighted to receive the wonderful birthday gift of glasses from the staff at Clarence House, and I hope that you will convey to all those who joined in this gift, my warmest thanks for their very kind thought, and my gratitude is most sincere….” Tallon (1935–2007) was the well-known “Steward and Page of the Backstairs” for Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, for five decades. As the longest-serving servant in Elizabeth’s household, Tallon was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal (Silver) in 1975 and the Royal Victorian Medal (Gold) in 2001.
