Inventor of the Colt revolver and founder of the Colt Firearms Company (1814–1862). ALS signed “Saml. Colt,” one faintly lined page, 7.75 x 9.75, December 8, 1844. Colt writes from Washington to Stephen Shima in Alexandria, Virginia. In full [his spellings retained]: “I have at last reached Washington to spend the winter & have put up at Jewet’s (‘Congress Hall’) opersit Coleman’s on Pencilvany Avanue. I wish you would call & see me the first time you come to the city & bring with you the papers relating to your claimes on the Government & will see what can be done to get them paid. In haste….” The reverse bears a pencil docket signed “S. Colt” requesting that a copy of the letter be made. Matted and framed with a photo (so that both sides are visible) to an overall size of 19.25 x 15.75. Intersecting folds and a hint of subtle soiling, wrinkling, and toning, otherwise fine condition.
