American statesman (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Ink signature, “Yours very affectionately, John Jay,” on an off-white 3.75 x 1.5 slip, clipped from a larger letter. Slip is pinned onto an unsigned letter, presumably from Jay’s assistant, acknowledging the sending of the signature. In fine condition, with a stray ink mark and light show-through from writing on reverse. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. R&R COA.
