Description

Union general and onetime commander of the Army of the Potomac (1824–1881); the distinctive whiskers he sported gave rise to the word “sideburns.” LS signed “A. E Burnside, Pres. Bristol Line,” two pages, lightly-lined, 5.25 x 8.75, crossed out Indianapolis Rail Road Company letterhead, July 16, 1868. Ambrose takes a newspaper editor to task for a false report. In full, “You state in your paper of today that ‘the negotiations for the sale of the Bristol line of steamboats to the Old Colony & Newport RR have been completed and the steamers will shortly be withdrawn.’ This statement is entirely incorrect. The Bristol Line will continue to run on its route at present rates of fare & we are not in negotiation with anyone for the sale of the boats. Will you please inform me of your authority for the statement you have made. I am sure you would not willingly mislead the public and therefore that you will correct your statement.” Accompanied by an original oval portrait of Burnside. Mild overall toning, some light creases and wrinkles, and a bit of scattered edge wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
