Description

The ‘Bambino’ signs a World’s Fair Academy of Sport certificate

DS, one page, 10 x 7, October 16, 1940. 1940 World’s Fair Academy of Sport attendance certificate issued to Norman Anderson, “and his intentions to practice the ideals of Sportsmanship and Clean Competition as exemplified by the Baseball and Football leaders who have instructed him.” Boldly signed at the bottom in black ink, “Babe Ruth,” and also signed by Clemson football hero Banks McFadden, as well as Ruth’s agent Christy Walsh. Ruth attended the World’s Fair as an instructor for the Academy of Baseball. While the fair attracted over 45 million visitors and generated roughly $48 million in revenue, the Fair Corporation had invested $67 million (in addition to nearly $100 million from private sources) and was forced to declare bankruptcy. Lightly trimmed edges, a few small creases and tears, small Babe Ruth Sports King card affixed to top right, and document affixed to an identical size sheet, otherwise fine condition. None of the flaws detract from the visual strength of Ruth’s fabulous signature. The gold foil seal is bright and intact, as well as the red, white, and blue ribbon. Auction LOA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
