ALS, signed twice (once in the text), one page, 8.75 x 6.5, May 28, 1789[?]. Hancock pens a message to his wife, whom he addresses as “My Dear.” In full: “Do Give Mr. Webb Nine Dollars, & Give Mr. Thayer Nine Dollars, out of the smallest Bag in the Closet in our Bed Chamber. I am, yours affect’y….” Hancock adds a postscript, “Let them sign the under recd.,” and writes below: “We acknowledge to have paid of John Hancock Esqr. Nine Dollars each in full for work done in his garden at Boston, & in full of all amonts.” Both [Joseph] Webb and [Titus] Thayer have signed at the conclusion. Hancock’s Boston home, adjacent to the State House, was demolished in 1863. The item is accompanied by a sheet of “Collection of Elsie O. and Philip D. Sang” letterhead, indicating probable provenance from that landmark collection of Americana. The document is affixed to a heavy card, which also bears an antique portrait engraving, measuring 12.5 x 7 overall. Mounting as noted, tear to blank lower margin, and a hint of mild scattered soiling, otherwise fine, bright condition. The writing is extraordinarily clear and dark.
