Description

On the etymology of “stalag”: “A Nazi word for prisoner of war camp”

Influential Pulitzer Prize–winning American author (1878–1968) of such muckraking classics as The Jungle, Boston, and Oil!, the last of which served as the basis for the acclaimed 2007 film There Will Be Blood. TLS signed “Upton,” one page, 8.5 x 5.5, personal letterhead, November 9, 1948. Sinclair writes to Martin Birnbaum in New York City. In part: “I wish that I could have heard your lecture. Thank you for your very kind answer to my circular letter…. ‘Stalag’ is a Nazi word for prisoner of war camp. The Lag is Lager and the Sta, I suppose, is Staats….” Vertical fold through signature and toning and a few small creases to bottom margin (well away from signature), otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
