Description

ADAMS counsels a budding photographer: “You are certainly improving your ‘eye’”

Famed American photographer (1902–1984) best known for his monumental images of western American landscapes. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, March 11, 1971. Adams writes to aspiring photographer Rednor Coombs. After mentioning an illness, Adams continues: “I think your work is very sensitive; you are certainly improving your ‘eye’…. You have a tendency to go a little dark and heavy at times. Perhaps this is in attempt to preserve some texture in the high values. Temperature has a lot to do with contrast; the cooler it is, the higher the contrast. Once you have established a ‘normal time” for the temperature, try a little less than normal time. You can soften the prints—up to the point where the blacks become ‘mushy’….” After signing, Adams adds a vertical postscript in the left margin, which he signs a second time: “The first printing of Book One has too many typo ‘boo-boos’; the 2nd printing (due soon) will be better. I set the metronome for 60 beats a minute—not per second!! Flood lights give an even light—not an uneven light….” Light diagonal crease, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
