Description

Thomas Mifflin (1744–1800) was a signer of the U.S. Constitution from Pennsylvania and first governor of that state. Partly printed DS, signed “Tho. Mifflin,” one page, 16.25 x 12.5, January 12, 1797. An appointment for Asheton Humphreys as notary public. Countersigned on the reverse by Rufus King (1755–1827), fellow signer of the U.S. Constitution from Massachusetts, senator, Ambassador to Great Britain (at the time of signing), and unsuccessful presidential and vice-presidential candidate. The document retains its wax and paper seal at upper left. A related document signed by Humphreys is attached to the reverse Intersecting folds (light vertical fold to signature; associated crack to seal) and mild handling wear, otherwise fine, bright condition.
