Brennan writes to fellow Justice Arthur J. Goldberg. In part: “Is it 11:30 a.m. & the office of the Solicitor General is ready to demolish your dissent in Barnett 376/681…. The case is No. 6 Harris v. U.S. I’m still with your dissent. We miss you.” Earlier in that year, Goldberg had resigned from the Supreme Court at the request of LBJ in order to replace the recently deceased Adlai Stevenson as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
