Description

“The Royalists .... took possession of Lima”

American naval officer (1778–1869) who commanded vessels in the First Barbary War and the War of 1812. LS signed “Ch. Stewart,” one page, 7.75 x 12.75, June 27, 1823. Stewart, then in Callao in the midst of Peru’s Wars of Independence, writes to William Bayard in New York. In part: “I have the honor of enclosing … bill of lading of four boxes and one keg, containing twenty-two thousand Spanish dollars, shipped by the Cora for New York. This is the first opportunity I have had for transmitting your funds, since the last remittance from Valparaiso, in consequence of an embargo on this port, for some time past. The Royalists, about 9000 men … took possession of Lima, on the 18th inst. without opposition, with their advanced guard. He has levied contributions of money &c on the city, to about half a million of dollars, and has declared that neutral and private property should be respected…. The patriot forces, about 4,500 men, retreated…. Lima remains quiet, and from the dispositions of Genl. Canterac, there is every reason to believe he means to keep it, and blockade Callao by land….” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (edge separations; light vertical fold to last name), tiny edge tears, and light wrinkling. R&R COA.
