Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina (1746–1809).  DS, signed “Tho. Heyward, Jnr,” one page, 12.75 x 7.25, January 5, 1785. Legal document commanding sheriffs of the state to present Catharine Bower before the Justices of the State to answer to James Graham regarding damages in the amount of 250 pounds. Boldly signed on the left side by Heyward. In good to very good condition, with tape repair to complete bisecting vertical separation, scattered toning and soiling, lightly trimmed edges, repaired separation to lower right corner, and document inlaid to an identical size sheet. In his 1995 reference History Comes to Life, Kenneth Rendell places Heyward’s autograph material into the “scarce” category among the Signers. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
