A Hemingway holiday

ANS, signed “Ernie,” one page, 6 x 8, no date [envelope postmarked Dec. 31, 1940]. In full: “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Ernie.” Accompanied by the original airmail envelope, postmarked from Havana and addressed in Hemingway’s hand to his mother, Grace Hall Hemingway in River Forest, Illinois. Hemingway has also signed the envelope (as “Hemingway”) and written his return address at the Hotel Ambos Mundos in Havana, his longtime Cuban residence. Hemingway called the hotel “a good place to write” and produced the opening chapters of For Whom the Bell Tolls there. Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold touching two words of text) and light wrinkling and creasing to envelope (mainly to blank portion at right), otherwise clean, fine condition.
