Description

INSIDE THE F.B.I.: Thirty-five-year correspondence from J. EDGAR HOOVER

Thirty-four TLS signed “J. Edgar Hoover,” all addressed to James W. Going, evidently a Bureau accountant, at various FBI branches (including New York City, Atlanta, and Philadelphia; a few to his home address), various sizes on FBI letterhead, 1936–1971. Most of the letters provide notice of transfers, raises, and promotions. A number allude to Going’s “lack of interest” in FBI-mandated training courses, to which Hoover pointedly remarks that he “trust[s] it will not be necessary to again call to your attention”; other letters report the results of said courses. A few excerpts from letters related to other matters: “Transmitted herewith is a set of notes on National Bankruptcy Act investigations. It is desired that you carefully review these notes and be prepared to discuss fully with the Bankruptcy Supervisor the matters set forth therein…. It is indeed a pleasure to acknowledge receipt of your suggestion dated April 25, 1955, relative to a certain form…. I have received your proposal that a change be made in the requirements for auditing imprest funds…. In further reference to your suggestion that a change be made in the requirements for auditing imprest funds, I am indeed pleased to advise you that your idea has been adopted…. I will be happy to present your Twenty-fifth Anniversary Key on November 5, 1959, in the presence of your wife and daughter…. I want to thank you for the suggestion … recommending the use of code words to denote that a subject is considered to be armed and dangerous or that he may have suicidal tendencies. You will be interested to know that similar suggestions were previously considered and it was concluded that they should not be adopted since our present procedure is more desirable…. Please accept my thanks for your message of congratulations on my Anniversary as Director…. I want to drop you a note at this time to express the hope that you are progressing satisfactorily following surgery. Let me suggest that you not be in a hurry to return to work; instead, give yourself the benefit of plenty of time to recuperate…. I want to extend my sincere sympathy to your family and you on the passing of your brother…. I was very pleased to learn that I have your support in the face of the completely unwarranted attack by ‘Newsweek.’ It was most thoughtful of you to write and to send the editorial from ‘The Greenville News’….” Accompanied by several pieces of ephemera related to Going and the FBI. In fine condition overall, with typical scattered handling wear (including wrinkling and creases) and scattered light soiling with a few stains. R&R COA.
