Exactly nine years later, on August 6, 1974, Nixon made the decision to resign following the revelation of the contents of the infamous “smoking gun” Watergate tape to members of Congress. It is documented that, on that date, Nixon made handwritten notes on a sheet headed “Resignation Speech” for the use of his speechwriter. Two days later, on August 8, Nixon bid farewell to the presidency—and ensured himself a place among the most reviled and controversial figures in the history of American politics.
