Description

On the caloric engine

Swedish-American Army engineer (1803–1889) who designed and built the ironclad warship Monitor for the American Navy. ALS signed “J. Ericsson,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, February 11, 1860. Ericsson writes to an unnamed man. In part: “I have been expecting to hear of that Chilean mining engineer in relation to the hoisting drums used at the mines in that country. It is indispensable that Mr. Banks receives further instructions from me … as the parties purchasing the caloric engine do not understand that it cannot be backed—with mules the backing is affected by their turning round and walking in a contrary direction….” Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to last name), a few wrinkles and small tears, and slightly irregular left edge, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
