Description

“I might even reach the year 2000!”: VARGAS writes to HUGH HEFNER

Peruvian-born American illustrator (1896–1982) best remembered for his colorful, sensuous renderings of pinup-style nudes. ALS signed “Alberto,” one page, 8.5 x 11, no date. A draft of a letter sent to Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner, whom Vargas addresses as “Hef.” In part: “I must apologize for being so tardy in thanking you most sincerely for the magnificent color photo[?] of you and me chatting at your luncheon in your mansion…. Yes, besides my daily home activities I’ve managed to please most of the networks who invited me to appear with my original descriving [sic] them to their viewers who always want more and wonder how old I am! 85 years! I push my hand close to the TV lens and they still don’t believe it! I had spent two years researching material suitable for the book which you so kindly indorsed [sic], thereby neglecting a load of unfinished work! So, when the painting of Bernadette Peters cover album was suggested I gingerly accepted and the result was admired by everybody. With the memory of ‘my Arma’ and your friendship, who knows—I might even reach the year 2000! Anytime you need me I’ll be there with bells on!…” Mild toning and irregular left edge from notebook removal, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
